HS Top 200’s Top 5 Wingers for 2018

Selesitino Ravutaumada (Rotorua BHS)

If you see Raukura play this year you will see Tino sporting the No.15 Jersey around but for me personally I think at Rep level Winger would be a better fit for him. He is a very hard player to defend because he comes with a lot of moves right off the touch of the ball. He is very quick to make a move once the ball is in his hands, it really comes without warning and he flashes with a quick step then he is gone. Tino makes a “One on One” situation with him a chance for him to show his real depth with how many moves he has. “One on One” situations is a try scoring opportunity and this year I think he’ll be one of the leaders in the country with Tries scored. Look for Tino to make a strong push for NZSS through out this year and with his talents and abilities he is really going to turn some heads.

Gideon Kautai (Hastings BHS)

Being in a system like Hastings BHS and the amount of Super Stars they have had over the last few years, Gideon has been able to sit back and really learn about his game and his position without the pressure to lead. Gideon has played Fullback most of the time but his ability to go “One on One” and also to lose defenders while hugging the side line I think gives him a great start to be a top winger this year. I like the speed he brings to the position and his defence is strong too and doesn’t need he help either so you can always trust he’ll bring down his man. His role this year will be to help lead his team and be that mental strength to get his team in and out of games.

Tyrique Renata (Mt Roskill GS)

Here is another guy that plays Fullback but will be a better Winger when all the Reps come together. Tyrique is not going to be heard about because he is at a 1B school so I’ll give you the heads up on this talented kid and what he can do on the field. Go watch Mt Roskill GS and he’ll be the stand out player for them with everything they do, his ability to command the ball and make plays at the end of a move is what you want from your winger and so I think he’ll fit real good. He is a strong runner who swerves through gaps and he is actually really strong too and hard to stop. I really hope he gets that chance in the U18 Blues because he is a real talent and makes a team better.

Moses Christie (Gisborne BHS)

Our first winger on this list is Moses a player that is not a big kid at all but is fast as hell, has great foot work, quick off the mark and can finish off moves. There are not a lot of players in the country that are Wingers that know how to finish a play or a move. Just because you get the ball at the end of the  move doesn’t mean its done because you are setup to beat your man and really put pressure on the fullback or whoever is that cover defender. Moses doesn’t just finish moves but he scores a lot off those kinds of plays. I hope he makes the Hurricanes U18 Camp so he can show up and really prove that he is the good.

Chris Bryan (Francis Douglas MC)

Chris is a very explosive and aggressive player who play an in your face style of rugby which is a massive benefit to the team and getting the ball up the field. Chris is a perfect league winger that you can give the ball too and he’ll truck it up and make meters. He has good leg drive, a good fend that is strong and steady, he does also play with some good foot work that gives him that extra time to hold the defence and takes on heavy contact very well. His defence is one of the skills that he brings that really helps a team. In the CNI he is going to stop a lot of players from scoring tries, gaining momentum and that is the type of player that can win games for you.
