I still have no laptop and everything seems to be closed here on a Saturday so I cant get it fixed and I cant even up load the pictures for you Girl’s so Im going to make this quick and give you a quick run down on how each game went. I also have to say that I didnt get a program and also when I saw the program their was no numbers to the names listed so Im sorry if I replace your name with the number on your back.
Southern Cross Campus 17 – 22 St Mary’s College
I really liked the way this game was played because they knew what was needed to win and how to use the wind to their advantage. St Mary’s had the wind in the first half and used it well just kicking it down field as many times as they could and they scored off it. The St Mary’s Center wearing the No.8 Jersey was the best on the field with her very aggressive running and foot work to go with it, she was backed up by good play from the Halfback and 1st 5/8. Those two set the standard by which the ball came out fast and allowed her to move with the space in front of her. I thought the forwards were real good and had so much time with the ball they used it to truck up the middle of the field and really put pressure on the defence. The Lock No.4 as well as the girl wearing No.7 and Hooker were very good and were key to the defence. I think without those 3 running up to meet those tackles the team would have lost because that defence needed to be strong against Southern Cross.
The Captain Prop wearing No.22 was a beast and was “King of the Jungle” running the ball, I felt sorry for the first defender running in to tackle her because they reminded of those old ads for sun screen where UV rays would bounce of the body, they were the same just tacklers flying off her. Her running made it possible every time to get her team moving forward up the field I thnk without her they would have not made progress so easy. The Hooker and No.6 were also very good in that area of making ground after her. The 2nd 5/8 for Southern Cross I thought also stood up and took it to the Center of St Marys and was almost equally on par with the Center. The coaching staff brought on No.23 the other big Prop who also started running the ball a lot and was making a lot of ground up the field and took some pressure off the Captains duty of running the ball.
The Southern Cross girls needed to use that 2nd half better to get the ball out of their half and kick down field and make the St Marys girls run more. Both teams were really good and I thought they put on a very entertaining first game of the day.
Hamilton Girls 51 – 12 Southland Girls
Now this game I was excited for not only because it was a Hamilton School but because Southland GHS always have a lot of talent and I thought its was going to be a massive show of talent and high skill set. Now the Skills and Talent were shown but Hamilton GHS were just all over the Southland Girls team. The Hamilton lot spread the ball very well with the wind blowing into their face and went up to a quick lead of 17-5 within the first 15 mins. Now I credit everyone in that Hamilton GHS team except for the winger cause they would score even before the ball got to them in the first 15 mins. That how fast the ball moved beating the defenders that the wingers were not really used. The two big Props running was hard to stop then you had the 2 Locks for Hamilton also making that second wave of running even stronger and then the ball was fired out to the midfield where 12 and 13 just ran all day. The wingers got into the game right in the second half splitting tackles and extending plays and a lot of tries came by way of them and that fast back line led by the Halfback who had a very strong game.
The Southland Girls side when you watched them had a very high skill rate but for me they just didnt have the same size as the Hamilton GHS lot. Southland Girls were very quick with their rucks and getting it to the Lock and No.8 who were very strong players and they would make meters every time with foot work and off loading. I really liked the 1st 5/8 for Southland and thought she had a very good pass and tried to get the other girls into space and running onto the ball. The half back was also good but because of the short time give had to really rush things unlike that Hamilton Half Back who was shining cause she had a lot more time to do stuff. Southland GHS will need to run the ball a lot in space and move the ball quickly on Sunday or Southern Cross will score big again. Southland Girls have to much talent on that team to have another score like this on Sunday.
Southland should have a better day tomorrow and I know they will be ready to run that ball and spread the field the way I think they can do it.
