I have been following a little bit of Australian School Boys rugby this year and have been some what impressed with the amount of talent that is coming through. I think they are in a situation that can be solved at this level and then it rise to the top….hopefully. I know a few of the player from this year that have come up and after a really good Australian SS run last year we see Josh Vatu and Lachlan Lonergan back, but they do have more to see.
Charlie Rorke is one of the players to watch out for in this team, he has been playing Blind side all year for St Ignatius College but the word is that he might even be looked at as the best choice at Open Side. He is one of those destroying defenders that hits hard and then drives through runners and would pick him to be the defencive leader of this side. He was one player I think last year was unlucky to miss out on coming to NZ with the Australian Secondary School’s because after being picked for the Australian Barbarians he was then added to the Waratahs U20 roster. I think that he will have to be the guy they look to when it comes to the end of the game and if they are winning or losing he’ll be the one they rely on.
They have some big Prop’s Angus Bell out of Newington and also Darcy Breen from Scots College, both big kids that work hard in the trenches and are pretty solid come scrum time. Angus Bell really showed out this year as one of the best in the country. He comes as a leader of sorts on the field kind of a no non-sense kind of player that brings it every game. The loose head Prop I think would go great against our boys.
Waverly College was looked at as one of the best school in Australia and posted some big scores this year. They have 3 boys in the team Ben Donaldson, Luca Moretti and Finn Wright. Returning Australian SS player from last year and is also looked at maybe being the Captain is Trinity Christian College Hooker Lachlan Lonergan. I remember him in the Barbarians game going against our boys and having a pretty solid game too, I think he’ll bring that mongrel to the forward pack and with his experience they should go good. Josh Vatu also returns back to the Australian SS and with guys like Center Jordan Petaia and Carlos Tizzano out of Trinity College out in WA they should have some real pace and very good finishers.
I hear that the games will be Live Streamed on the Australian Rugby website and also on the FB page as well.
